Mr. Sears, didn't you find that Xena was unjustifiably too powerful for a woman or human for that matter. Would her abilities be more justifiable if the series just came out and said she was a demigoddess?

1. Heres a what if question for you. If it were possible for Borias to have gotten Xena away from the camp in Past imerfect, do you think it would have been possible for them to remain a family, or would the darkness in her have won out?
It would have been an interesting episode. Alti would have come after her, and a battle of Borias and Alti would have been inevitable. Hmm.... good idea. The darkness would have won out, though, because if it hadn't... we wouldn't have had a series. 2. Was there ever a decision you made on a script that you were sure you was a right one and was made to change it? If so which and why?? Yep. I can't remember offhand, but it happens more than you think. Usually you can accomodate things so that everyone is happy. And, to be honest, I have to find something in the change that I believe in so that I'm not just typing in a change. It wasn't anything major, though. There was a major disagreement on the editing of A GOOD DAY, I believe. It was long and to make it fit, some changes were going to be made that infuriated me. So Rob and I talked about it and the changes weren't made. Others were made that I didn't like but could live with, but the ones that destroyed the heart of the episode (like losing Temecula) didn't happen. |

" If you could pick any other place that New Zealand to shoot XWP where would you shoot it?"
And get access to the amazing talent we had on and off camera? I can't think of anywhere else. Seriously. |

"I simply want to thank you for writing the puppet show at the 10th Anniversary convention. It was a most wonderful piece that had me laugh and cry, nearly at the same time. You are so very talented and know your audience very well."
Thank you, thank you. I was so happy at the response. It made me feel good that I was able to touch the fans one more time. |

" If there was anything you would change in any of the episodes you produced/wrote or the series if you could?"
Oh, yeah. Plenty of things. I'm pretty picky. The gabdrag would have been shorter and a little more believable. The Ming Tien lie would have been done differently. And many other things. But that's just searching for flaws. Everyone of us is a critic of our own work, even Rob. And as much as Rob gets flack, he had a great talent for allowing people to experiment and arguing their own side. I'm sure that we all could say there are things that we would have done differently, but we didn't and it was always for a reason. |

I thought some of the stunts and abilities really REALLY pushed the plausibility envelope (LOST MARINER... how long was that jump?). But I didn't want her to be a demigoddess for the reasons I already stated. I liked playing the human with amazing talents and abilities, which she had because of who she was, not what her genetics were. But many of the exceptional abilities were due to enthusiastic filmmaking. |

Hey Steve, nice answer, but I didn't quite get the answer I was looking for.......so, to be blunt.....Did Lucy or Renee actually get naked on set?
also, just for your own purpose, I 'm providing a copy of Katherine's words from her website. I disagree with you that she interpreted TPTB's words in her own way. She's a very sharp lady who I hope if you haven't already had the privaledge of meeting, that you do so soon since she is a delighful woman. Tony Name: Mo Comments: Hi Katherine, This is not a question but a note of support. I read your news page about filming an interview for season six. I am afraid that it is more than likely that you would receive harsh words from many on-line poster as well as e-mails when this interview is seen. You have always been honest and open about your opinion on Xena and Gabrielle, I applaud you for that. Each to their own is a noble concept and of course the correct one, however that view seems not to apply to you, you are harshly spoken about and some of what you say is sometimes rudely dismissed as not true, that in my opinion is disrespectful, not just a difference of opinion. You have many supporters and friends that is the most important thing to remember when the backlash arrives and I m afraid it will arrive. KATHERINE RESPONDS: i think once you state any kind of opinion - you should expect backlash. it's inherent. people don't like opinions when they differ from their own. it's usually fear-based, too. you don't react to things that don't cause you fear. we aren't meant to agree with everyone - but if we truly are meant to learn and grow from each other, we can keep our hearts open to different ways of life. and acceptance. so rarely practiced. but what's interesting with direct regards to the subtext on xena though, which is what you are implying caused the harsh words and backlash, is that folks need to remember i didn't "invent" anything. i came to the show in the last season and was certainly told by my employers their vision of the show so that i can write appropriately for it. meaning, yes, i was explicitly told by the executive producers, the writing staff and the two lead actors that the characters of xena and gabrielle evolved from friends to a lover relationship over the course of the series. if it's important for others to think i am lying or was lied to -- what can you do except state the truth? it wasn't my show. i didn't invent it or create it. on the positive side, how many other shows can say they live on so deeply in the hearts of fans that the show is still talked about and debated all these years later? what a great success! thank you for caring though. and try not to let it affect you, either. everyone is entitled to take away what moved them from the show. |

Is there a certain reason you chose to put Xena in the time period you did (Caeser, Greek myths, Amazons) or did you or Rob just like the idea?
(okay that was my last question, sorry for the many, don't worry I'm done now!) |

Thanks alot from doing this for us Mr. Sears and thanks to the mods for arranging this in the first place.
I have to say that I, I was going to just sit back and observ. I knew alot of people had alot of questions and thought whatever I wanted to know would be covered. However when reading some of the questions, I thought of something to ask. When doing a multi-parter episode like "Sacrifice," for instance, how exactly did that work? Tapert would pitch to you what he would like to happen and then off you go and write the episode? I imagine you had to coordinate with the other writers so that the entire story would be cohesive. Why wasn't the same writer asked to pen all the parts of a multi-episode like that? I have to admit, I surfed your "Pondalee" site when you first popped on this board the other day, and notice that you're a Jeep entusiast. Do you go off roading alot? Was this hobby brought about by working on shows like Xena that were filmed in exotic locations? |

So, Steve are you going to be able to catch Lucy at the Seattle Men's Choir or will the convention interfere with that?

Nope. I do know they used cover-ups and doubles. If they did, it certainly wasn't known to any of us on the staff. I came in after Xena was already on Hercules and the pilot had been written, so I didn't participate in that. But as Xena was a spinoff of Hercules, the answer is right there. Xena was set in the time period she was created into. "(okay that was my last question, sorry for the many, don't worry I'm done now!)" The mods are being my strong arms on this because I asked not to get more than two questions per post. It's not their fault. But I don't have a problem with more questions from the same poster, just not at the same time. Let me take them two at a time. |

I wanted to compliment your writing of "A Good Day", my favorite episode of the series, for what seemed to be a perfect balance of personal dialogue and action, memorable supporting and adversarial characters, a moving musical score, and plenty of action for Xena and bonding/tragedy developments for Gabrielle. This one would have made a great theater movie.

Is there anything about a XENA movie?

That was quite a hodge-podge. In a good way. Rob and RJ knew how they would like to end the season, so we all talked about the best way to do it. Originally, I was going to write a one episode ending. But it became so big, we knew it wouldn't do it justice. So Paul was brought in to write Sacrifice 1 and I was writing Sacrifice 2. Somewhere in all that, we had to change places (I can't remember why, probably a production reason of some sort). So Paul wrote part 2 and I had part 1. We kept in touch so that we knew how to dovetail the elements. Oh, wait, I think I wrote part 1 because I was more involved with the show and it was easier for me to establish the set-ups and allow Paul to write the pay-offs. And Paul is great with that kind of stuff anyway. Anyway, we kept in touch then, when we were both finished, I took both hours and just smoothed them out to make sure all the edges lined up. It was quite a venture! "I have to admit, I surfed your "Pondalee" site when you first popped on this board the other day, and notice that you're a Jeep entusiast. Do you go off roading alot? I've had 4x4's going back twenty years or so, and I love to go off-roading (on approved trails only, tread lightly). I've had Land Rovers and Jeeps and the Jeep Rubicon I have now is by far the most KICK @#%$ OFFROADING VEHICLE EVER!!!! Sorry... even I have my geek moment.s |
