write an episode of Xena? Established fantasy/sci-fi/horror/fiction author that is. And why?

I don't know if this qualifies but... :
I think Stephen King could have made one heck of a thriller out of the FIN. He writes some really way out there stuff. Irene |

Yeah, why not broaden this to any writer? in whatever genre?
I think Megan Lindholm could have written a great episode with Xena and mortal Ares, sort of like the interaction between Ki and Vandien in her Windsingers books. She's great with plot and dialogue too. LADYKATE, ARES' PR REP HERE ON EARTH

Well, as Xena was a fantasy show with elements of drama/comedy and such at times, what ever author you think could have added something extra to the show is welcomed and just give a reason why.

Aaron Sorkin? Xena meets The West Wing? Hmmm...
It'd have to be a kinder, gentler XENA. Michael Crichton, now there's a great idea!!!! LADYKATE, ARES' PR REP HERE ON EARTH

Oooh oooh oooh I know! I know!
Tom Holt! If you don't know who he is, check out the Amazon.com page for this book: Expecting Someone Taller Tom Holt is a British author who writes comedy/fantasy books reinventing ancient mythology in a deliciously wacky creative way, and artfully mixing up the ancient and the modern... does that ring a bell? He'd have done wonders with Xenaverse!LADYKATE, ARES' PR REP HERE ON EARTH

Awww.... why Ari.... thank you!
Actually Tig's question called for "established" i.e. published fiction writers, but if we're going to include fanfiction writers into the mix, I can think of a number who could have a terrific job -- shippers, subtexters, or general. (Including many of the people on this board ) I wish they'd gotten Temora to write an episode -- her X/G stories (subtext but not alt) are great.LADYKATE, ARES' PR REP HERE ON EARTH

I think that Mercedes Lackey would have been able to write a great episode or three...she knows how to really work with strong female characters. So does Gael Baudino for that matter...hrmm...that would be really interesting.
Geeze, there are so many good authors out there...Anne McCaffrey probably would have done a good job, and so would have MZB. Oh...Steven Brust would have done a fantastic Autolycus story. Heh, I could go on and on... Red |

Ralph Hemecker and Rick Okie,
from the first season of Witchblade, would have done some great epic, serialized storylines for Xena. I can SOOOO see them doing justice to The Twlight arc, and getting every nuance that we talk about in there solidly. And boy - they can write a vulnerable but tough heroine, searching and relying on friends, and being drawn to dangerous dark individuals, like nobody's business. *sigh* They had mapped out such a tight, wonderful heroine plotline ... it was markedly different when Ralph gave up the writing reins largely in the second season. Rick Okie, from what I know, is "old school" in the t.v. script bizz, he goes waaay back. There's an author we were touching on in Shipper Talk, who wrote the Kushiel's Dart trilogy...{Name?} fantasy, apparently she writes very intricately- the descriptives, but maybe she could've paired it down to script form, added more action. I plan to pick up those books soon. ![]() |

Roger Zelazny (before his death - he died in '95, so he could have written some scripts for the first season.) His Amber novels are being adapted for Sci-Fi right now, so prepare to be blown away. He was the master all the way back to the 60's of blending the harsh cynical hero, intense action, and a lot of wry humor and anachronism. My fave sci-fi author.
Piers Anthony. Another favorite, best known for his Xanth novels, and his Incarnations of Immortality series (the latter of which I'm not wild about.) Very into character-driven humor and whimsy, as well as deep ethical and philosophical musing. "Forget Me Not" could easily have been one of his. Marion Zimmer Bradley. Now best known for the Avalon novels, but I was fond of her long before she was discovered by the mainstream. Andre Norton. Did everything MZB did, 3 decades earlier. Ursula K. LeGuin. Ditto. C. J. Cherryh - I've only read a few of her books, but she's very much into both heroic fantasy, and the classics. Poul Anderson (before his death in 2001.) Another one of the greats, and comfortable with Greco-Roman times, and anachonism. Jessica Amanda Salmonson - I've mentioned her Amazon-inspired writings before. Harlan Ellison. The angry young man of sci-fi, now almost 70. The guy who threw Capt. Kirk into Joan Collins' arms, and caused TV sci-fi to grow up overnight. Samuel R. Delaney, Harry Harrison - other faves. |

Some very good choices JF. I'm a big fan of most of those authors as well. Zelazny's Nine Princes of Amber and Lord of Light being particular favorites.
And MZB's Darkover novels were to me just as fascinating as the Mists of Avalon. Another author who could've done well at writing Xena would've been L. Sprague de Camp, he and Fletcher Pratt showed that they had a good hand at mixing ancient mythology and modern anachronisms in their Incompleat Enchanter series. Although I have some issues with de Camp in his treatment of REH, I must admit that the Incompleat Enchanter was a great book. As a side note I would like to mention that L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology fame once wrote a short story in which he killed off the hero of the Incompleat Enchanter. This was back in the 30's when L. Ron was a science fiction writer and not a cult leader. Anyhoo de Camp and Pratt were none too pleased with this and considered doing a rebuttal piece but in the end decided to ignore it. If we're talking about a comedy episode I don't think you could find a better writer then Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. Another author who would have an interesting take on the series would be Norman Spinrad. An author who's been banned in Germany can't be all bad. Another author who has shown that he can write convincing warrior women, IMHO, is S.M. Stirling, he and Shirley Meier's 5th Millenium novels written in the early 90's actually have a duo, Megan and Shkai'ra, that are very Xena and Gabrielle like. One final plug is for Guy Gavriel Kay a fantasy author of such works as the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy. I think he would brought a whole new level and depth to the emotional scenes and the love story between Gabrielle and Xena. Luv Alena |

Oh yeah - DeCamp! A perfect choice, and was alive until 2000!
I've only read a little of Spinrad - "Agent of Chaos," which I liked, some short stories, plus I think he wrote another Trek classic - "Doomsday Machine." Ah - a couple of other choices - Andy Offut, Robert Asprin, and Lynn Abbey - I've read most of Asprin's "Myth" and "Phule" books, Offut did some Conan novels, I think, and all three were behind that Thieves' World series (which I never read enough of to get into.) Original Trek was good about that - a lot of established sci-fi authors did scripts sort of fre-lance for them. And yeah - "Nine Princes" is possibly my favorite novel of all times. I'm very fond of "This Immortal," "Isle of the Dead," and "Doorways in the Sand" too. Plus that novella "The Furies," that pretty accurately predicts (in passing) the future way that far-off strangers can connect and gather data via computers. (He did that in "Coils" too.) |

Spinrad definitely march's to the beat of his own drummer. One novel of his that I would recommend would be Child of Fortune.
Another novel that I hesitate to recommend is The Iron Dream for fear of being misunderstood. This is a satire, a parody, but as Joe Bob Briggs found out at the Dallas Times Herald not everyone "gets" the satire. This was the case with Spinrad's The Iron Dream and the Federal Republic of Germany. I say check it out but remember that it is a parody and one that operates on more then one level. It is not The Turner Diaries. I'm also a fan of Asprin's Myth Adventures and I was in on the ground floor on Thieves World. The first of the shared worlds books. I thought it was great for the first few books but the quality began to decline towards the end, plus there were ego clash's between the authors. You weren't supposed to be able to kill off each others characters but Offut got around that by killing off the patron diety of another character that was an integral part of what made him who he was. Another author that I'm fond of is Elizabeth Moon, the author of The Deed of Paksenarrion series. A trilogy chronicaling the adventures of a young woman warrior who becomes a Paladin. A holy warrior-knight dedicated to the Light. Think a kinder and gentler Najara. Luv Alena |

Andrew Offutt and Richard Lyon did a trilogy I just love.
I bought it all on the cover art alone, though. Even scanned them in and posted them a loooong time ago, because I thought they were remincient of Xena's tough warrior on a horse. Lost the links, though. Andre Norton did all the positive reviews on the backs of them! Umm, color me stupid today, but what's "anachronisms" ? I know, but just, umm,,, forgot. Yea that's it... ![]() |

Something that doesn't fit in the time period. The clock chiming in "Julius Caesar," for example. The stage hand wearing jeans in the corner of a few frames of "Gladiator" (although that's just an editing error.) Aphrodite and Hercules talking like California surfers. Hercules jamming on an "electric" lyre. That kinda thing.

The Bronte Sisters. That show was starving for some good old brooding on the moors romance.

I do love Piers Anthony, he is a good choice, for comedy or tragey (I cannot believe that joxerfan did not like Incarnations of Immortality
...I maintain that those were some of the best books of his career, and remain one of my favorte series to this day.)Oh, Jennifer Roberson would do a good job, I love what she did with her sword-dancer Del...a very Xena-like character. Melanie Rawn knows how to build a relationship, and I think she'd do X/G justice in every way. Elizabeth Moon is another favorite of mine, though I don't think Paksenarion is anything like Najara...Paks was never a fanatic, she just always struggled to do what was right. Jacqueline Carey is the author of Kushiel's Dart, and the way she looks at the nature of love in her trilogy is great, something that the show struggled with at times. Diana Paxson is another great author, one that MZB helped bring to the spotlight. Her historical fantasy is excellent, and she'd bring a fantastic depth and color to the Xenaverse. And Louise Cooper I think would have done a great job with X/G, though I think she probably would have gravitated more towards Gabrielle, because she reminds me of her Indigo character. I think I'll leave it there for now...there some real interesting choices out there...I like this thread. Red |

Well, I didnt really mean to say that Paks was a fanatic like Najara I was just try to convey the idea of a warrior dedicated to the Light. Thats why I put in the line about a kinder and gentler Najara. Maybe the idea that she lived up to what Najara was supposed to be? In fact I guess of all the characters on the show I suppose she would be more like the warrior Gabrielle or maybe a fusion of Xena and Gabrielle. She had Xenas warrior skills and love of fighting, combined with Gabrielles innate goodness.
Speaking of Najara brings to mind some other questions but I think Ill raise them on a new thread since theyre really a bit off topic.
