Without much ado, I start with...
Season 1, Episode 1. "Will You Tolerate This?"
The episode does a very good job of setting up the basic situation. Robin, Earl of Huntingdon, and his manservant Much have returned from the Holy Land where Robin fought in the crusades. Returning to his estate, Loxley, they find that things are not what they used to be. Minor offenses like poaching and stealing are being punished in barbaric ways like hanging or chopping people's hands off. People are being taxed to death, supposedly to finance the war in the Holy Land. Guy of Gisborne, who has been managing Robin's estate in his absence, has been treating the people cruelly. The old sheriff of Nottingham -- father of Robin's childhood sweetheart, Marian of Knighton -- has been replaced by a new sheriff picked by Prince John, the regent in the absence of King Richard who is off in the Holy Land fighting. Robin finds himself in a situation where he has to preside over the hanging of three people from his village (and a fourth man, Allan-a-Dale). The old sheriff and Marian counsel him to go along and bide his time so he can start gathering opposition to the new sheriff among the other local nobles, but Robin's conscience rebels. At the last minute, he thwarts the execution by cutting the ropes with his arrows (very cool display of archery skills there!), escapes with the condemned men and the loyal Much, and becomes an outlaw.
Pluses: The episode is fast-paced and nicely plotted. I know there've been complaints about the writing on RH, but I thought this ep actually had some very good lines -- like when Much says they've returned from the war unscathed, and then adds, "Well, actually, scathed -- very scathed." Cool mix of drama, suspense and humor, and very good acting from all the principals.
Minuses: Hmm, well ... so far the action isn't much to speak of, except for some nice archery by Robin.
The characters/actors:
Robin (Jonas Armstrong): I'm liking him so far. He's hardly perfect -- he's a bit smug, especially toward Much (even though he has released Much from his servant status and is now supposed to treat him as more of a friend) and rather smarmy in his courtship of Marian (who, to her credit, quickly cuts through the B.S.). But his innate sense of honor really does shine through -- he has a sense of obligation to the people of his land, and ultimately he rebels because he won't be able to live with himself if he lets four people go to a cruel and undeserved death.
Marian (Lucy Griffiths): A lot of people have complained that she looks and acts a bit too modern for the series -- not in the sense of being too liberated but of looking too much like a 20th/21st Century pin-up girl. Well, there is a bit of that. Still, I like her spunk and humor, and the fact that from the very first episode it's clear she's no helpless damsel. She actually saves Robin's life when one of the sheriff's archers is about to shoot him, by throwing her hair brooch at the archer. (Hmm, shades of Xena and Lao Ma?
Guy of Gisborne (Richard Armitage): We don't as yet get to see very much of Guy's complexity in this episode. All we know so far is that he's second in command to the sheriff, and he's been a pretty harsh manager of the Loxley estate. To say that he doesn't have a sunny disposition would be a major understatement. On the other hand, he looks very hot in black leather.
The Sheriff of Nottingham (Keith Allen): Bravo! This guy almost steals the show.
Much (Sam Troughton): A very sweet and loveable character -- not too smart, but very brave and very devoted to Robin. He also contributes some of the show's more mellow humor.
Is this show like Xena? Yes and no. It definitely has a rather similar style and sensibility -- the mix of drama and humor, and the retelling of an archaic story in a quirky modern style (the Sheriff uses words like "la-dee-dah"
Subtext, anyone? Sooo, I've been hearing about all this possible subtext between Robin and Much. In the first episode, Much tells Robin he loves him -- obviously, that doesn't have to mean anything sexual, but it's interesting that Much gets totally distracted (if not distressed) when he sees Robin kissing a girl on a farm where they've stopped on the way to Loxley.
Foreshadowing. Guy mentions having seen Robin fight. Robin is puzzled and asks where; Guy equivocates. Heh. I know what's coming.
And that's it for now.
Thoughts, anyone?
