AFIN, Which characters should have been a part of it?

Royal Posts: 6955 (12/06/08 9:00 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : characters, afin AFIN was a letdown for not including or having characters that we grew to know and love over the last 6 seasons of the series, so my question is if you had a choice to include 3 characters who were alive during season 6, or were seen alive during there last episode appearence on the series, who would you have picked, also if you could include one dead character to appear as a ghost/dream/flashback etc. in some role, who would that have been too. Also how would they have been brought full-circle with Xena and Gabrielle? Do note, this is for AFIN version that happened of course, so the characters have to have a role in the real AFIN version. If you are saying that the story was unchanged, just had additional characters I would say, don't bother as it wouldn't have improved it. But if you are having a completely different story, that included aspects of s6 that has been carefully built up towards the finale (as in s3, s4, s5) I would say Ares, Aphrodite and the ghost of Joxer. I would actually have liked to have seen Gabrielle have a role that was more central to the plot.

And I think you're right Jolly. There was barely room for Gabrielle in this, so no other familiar characters would have made sense.

That would be me although others have doubtless made that observation as well. What bugged me the most about FIN was its lack of connection with anything else in the series - we get thrown into yet another backstory (way too many of those in S6 to begin with) and bombarded with new characters that we don't really give a damn about. Rob T. talked a lot about "closure" in this finale, but the only semblance of closure we got was Xena being offed and Gab becoming the new chakram-slinger. I don't think that the finale necessarily had to be in Greece, but it would have been nice to have seen some of the characters that meant the most to the show get a proper sendoff - Ares, 'Dite, Eve, even Angel Calli. I imagine she thought about many things, and people, before and after she died. Just because they didn't show it doesn't mean we can assume she didn't even give them a thought. I agree with what many have said here, I can't see where anyone else would have fit into the (lame) storyline in FIN without being forced. We never saw Ares or Aphrodite show up in Chin or other far away lands. And Eve had gone off on her own quest, so why would she just be in Japa all of a sudden? I would also have preferred Xena to have died making up for some wrong she'd done deliberately, not accidentally. Just relegated to a strangely incidental role in the plot. Basically she spends all this time running around retrieving Xena's body and protecting her ashes to bring her back ... and all for nothing. I think TPTB were to focused on a need for "closure" that they thought circular storytelling was a good idea. They began what they started in SOTP. Unfortunately they forgot everything they had done in between. I agree that Gabrielle was in character, but what was out of character was the relationship between the two. I'm not sure what we got in this episode, but it just wasn't the type of interactions/connection that we were used to seeing (or at least hadn't seen for a very long time). Again the return to their original goal/fate of the character of Xena made their relationship out of place. It just didn't fit into the type of story they wanted to tell. And as a concequence it all felt a little off. So in so many ways this is a story that should have been told very early on in the series. It didn't fit with where they were at the time. Nods in agreement Yes, Xena wasn't the same character I had grown to know and love when I saw the finale. Apart from the pretty awesome 'walking-through-a-shower-of-arrows' routine, this was a bit like....what? She had a completely different attitude to what I would expect of her. In regard to the original question, there isn't much point, if the basic plot is to remain. I would have liked to see Ares get involved somehow, but if it was about Jappa, then I don't see how he would fit. I did always think - 'Crikey, what's Ares' reaction going to be when he hears about this?! His Warrior Queen dead? Not on his watch.' TPTB need for closure, and their thirst for putting Xena and Gabrielle into foreign countries dominated AFIN far more than anything else. They were a bit caught up in themselves, wanted to show how great their cinematography was, how good their costumes were yadayadayada, whilst in the meantime, they completely forgot that it had nothing to do with Xena. That just happened to be the name of the title chracter of this episode. They threw all these characters at us that we would never connect to, and instead of giving us the 'closure' they were so desparate for, they just gave us more questions. Primarily, 'Why?' "I hate that.."

I agree, i would've liked to see Gabrielle as a more central character in that ep.- I think Joxer should've been the ghost/flashback character and I would've loved to have Ares & Dite back too But the part I hate the most about FIN, besides Xena dying, was that it wasn't connected o anything else in the series :S Avatar credit to Lucia N. I'm inclined to agree with LK that adding Ares and Eve to AFIN might make it worse or perhaps legitimize it which I wouldn't want. Also, I have a hard time envisioning a way to include either of them without it feeling clunky and awkward. I wouldn't want them there just so we could see them if it felt forced and unnatural. Not sure I'd like it if Ares appeared at the beginning with some warning for Xena. I'd prefer Ares was unaware of what was to occur instead of him allowing her to sail off into what I felt was a totally unfair "you have to stay dead" trap. However, one of my biggest pet peeves AFIN is that it acts as though Gabrielle was the only important person in Xena's life which is so clearly not true. My compromise to this is that I would like the scene where Xena slashes her way through the line of warriors to have included quick flashes of characters like Cyrene, Eve, Solan, Ares etc. in addition to Gabrielle which could have been the quintessential "life flashing before one's eyes" moment.
