I was recently introduced to a book series. I never heard of it but apparently it has a huge following - #1 best seller on all sorts of lists, tons of vlogs on
YouTube and such and now the first book is being made into a movie. The first book and the movieare both aptly namedTwilight. The author of the series
is Stephenie Meyer.
It started with one of my co-workers telling me that she's absolutely in love with this book she's reading called New Moon. It is the second
book of the series. She proceeded to explain a bit of what the first book Twilight is about...in a nut shell, it is a story about a girl who falls in
love with a vampire. I was like "oh, that sounds cool, sort of like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In my head I was making the mental note of
"been there, done that". I was a big Buffy fan but lost my zeal for the show once her human/vampire love story didn't come to fruition.
Needless to say, I wasn't running to jump on the band wagon. Then the next day, another co-worker (my office partner in crime) told me that she was starting
to read Twilight as well. I laughed and razzed them about turning into an office Oprah Book Club - three members so far.
Well…my friendfinished Twilight and told me I have to read it. It's really good. She insisted I read the book and without any
agreement from me, proceeded to get the book from the originator of this crazewhich unleashed the excitement of the other girls because I was essentially
joining in. Reluctantly, I trusted her judgment. All her other book recommendations panned out well for me, so what the heck, why not?
By Chapter 2, I was interested. By Chapter 6, I was involved. By Chapter 7, I was in love and by the end of the book I was madly obsessed - quite literally to
an almost unhealthy level. Needless to say, a week and a half later (including three days of intensive training at work), I managed to devour the second and
third book in the series New Moon and Eclipse . The fourth book Breaking Dawn is being released on August 2nd (midnight). I'm
seriously considering attending the release party at Barnes and Noble - seemingly ridiculous I know - but when was an obsession ever considered to be rational?
I don't think I've ever read a book, let alone a series of books that evoked the kind of emotional response these did in me. Despite the fantasy
elements, there is a lot of human relatability - love, sacrifice, passion, desperation, sadness, loss, heartache, hope, anger, jealousy, danger etc. I
don't want to elaborate on specific thoughts about the books in case someone hasn't read it (them) yet, but I do however highly, highly recommend them
if you're in the mood for an epic and riveting love story plus some suspenseful action. Here is a teaser trailer for the upcoming movie which is scheduled
to release on 12.12.08. I'm so excited for that!
