Which show do you think is the better one in terms of writing, acting, etc.? We have a lot of people here who enjoy watching BTVS and I'm curious to see if
anyone likes it even more than "Xena: Warrior Princess". And if so, how can we convince you to change your mind?
What's the better show? (Result) |

Xena is my deepest passion in terms of television shows. It is the one that captured me the most. I go in and out of my interest in Buffy
(and Angel, too). Not that it is bad or anything of that sort, and I do enjoy the show very much--but Xena has always been my number one.
It's the one that's hooked me the most and for the longest.
In terms of writing, I do have to give Buffy a considerable amount of credit for wonderful storylines and near perfect continuity. It had a consistency that would have been wonderful to see on Xena and for that, the show was great. I don't know if I can really compare acting since both shows are so very different in their ways, and I can like them for different things. So, I don't know if I can choose in that respect. |

I voted both equally...but then I realised I actually didn't like that much later seasons of Buffy. First couple seasons were very good and I was watching it before getting into Xena. I'd say overall Xena is better. |

For me...Xena. I was a big Buffy fan during it's course, but felt myself getting more and more disenchanted after Angel left. By the end, I wasn't
sad it was over. I'm still mourning that Xena is off the air.

I'd have to say that I'm a BIG fan of both. In terms of which show I was initially hooked on, it was Xena. I've said before in a previous post that
I grew up on Xena, and I meant it. I started watching when it first came out (I was in the 5th grade!) and haven't looked back since. It taught me a lot of
things when I was at a very impressionable age, so for that I owe Xena a lot. But in regards to Buffy, I didn't start to watch it until it was actually off
the air. I began watching re-runs of the last season on the FX network in 2003, at which point the show had been done for quite a while. I never thought I
would like Buffy, but to my surprise, I found it to be a great show that really delivered on a lot of different levels. Buffy came into my life at a point when
I really needed it, because I also learned a lot from that show, but I took those lessons in more of an "adult-like" manner, since at this point I
was about 20 years old. So I voted to say that I like them both equally. Both shows have been there for me a lot of times when I felt like nobody else was.
It's crazy to think how much something that seems so insignificant as a tv show can change people's lives, but both of these shows did that for me. But
in an actual cage match to the death? I'm putting my money on the warrior princess!

I love the character of Xena a whole lot more than Buffy. However I do love both shows.
Xena's got my one and only OTP and an approach to ambiguity I love and apply in "real life". Buffy on the other hand was a little better planned and the big story arcs of that show often worked better than when you saw an attempt on Xena to do the long arcs (with the exception of season 4). Xena provided a lovely bashing of norms and provided loads of ambiguity which I love both on the show and in real life. It also makes for more interesting discussions than Buffy in generally can provide. At the same time I absolutely adored the dialogue on BtVS and find it a lot better than on Xena. My final reply is both. That whole apples and oranges, or whatever fruit you want, thing applies. Both good, but in different ways. |

On the basis of my admittedly limited viewing of Buffy, I vote for Xena. I actually kind of like the fact that Xena doesn't have
perfectly planned storylines with everything neatly tied up. It's chaotic and messy sometimes. Like real life.
I have to say, having read some Buffy transcripts, I'm not persuaded that the dialog on Buffy is better. |

I've thought about this often and since I either change my mind or can't decide, I've come to the conclusion I like both shows equally.
I love horror, especially along the lines of vampires, werewolves etc. and magic (hence another of my obsessions Harry Potter) and Buffy delivers in that aspect. One of my earlier favorite movies was An American Werewolf in London. I had never seen a mix of comedy and total terror before. When Buffy came along it was a lot like that. I also love ancient or other-worldly fantasy genres such as Braveheart and Lord of the Rings, where everything is tough and hard and dirty. And Xena is that type of show. Plus there's some magic and bacchae thrown in occasionally, just as Buffy had the occasional swordfight. The most important things to make a TV show (at least one that I like) is well written and acted characters with interesting relationships. Both shows excel there. In terms of writing, I do think Buffy had the edge there. Joss Whedon is just a master at planning ahead for seamless story arcs and foreshadowing, and the "Buffyspeak" dialogue was great. I still find myself using it sometimes, not phrases but the style of it. As far as the main character, overall I like Xena better than Buffy. I think Sara Michelle Geller was tired of playing Buffy in the last couple of seasons and it showed onscreen. Sarah never attended fan conventions or did commentary for the DVDs. Lucy on the other hand obviously relished her time as Xena and still looks back on it fondly. Or maybe it's just those blue eyes that I like.

Umm...Buffy.
*ducks and covers* I mean, Xena is one of my all time favorite shows. Probably my favorite, BUT, I have to give props to the Buffy creators for the continuity, etc. I just think things flowed a little better there more than on Xena. BUT, I love both shows equally in every other aspect. Sarah and Lucy are both amazing actresses. They are both great at crying on the spot. My God, the tears in Buffy's eyes in "Touched" when Spike told her she was a hell of a woman, that she was the one...man, that just gets me every time. |

Buffus the Bacchae Slayer wrote: Same here, though the occasional phrases are forever stuck in my mind and will never go away (I laugh in the face of danger! then I hide until it goes

language was the same thing Xena did to norms. They took a big stick and poked it repeatedly until the grammar cried uncle, and then put their own version of
it out there (though I think they were quite heavily influenced by Heathers). I also think that BtVS in many ways
relied more on the words for battling than XWP did. Cordelia was there to be nothing but a verbal sparing partner for the gang. Same with the lovely and
ridiculously quick banter between Buffy and Giles. Also it could use popcultre references to create new expressions and comedy (I still laugh myself silly at
"the creature from the Blue Lagoon"-joke), something XWP writers could not (to the same extent at least).

I'm outing myself.
Buffy. For everything that's been said. Nothing else I've ever watched and come to love (xfiles as well as xena) has come close to torquing me in the various ways Buffy has. It's not just enjoying a show but having it live inside my head. But it's not like I have to explain that to you guys, right? *puts a helmet on* |
