I voted subtexter, 5 chakrams---same as my vote in the season 5 poll, but for different reasons this time. In the fifth season, the relationship b/w X/G seemed
to be more of a below-the-threshold type of thing, where as in this season, season 6---it seems the writers just had a fiesta with it. Mostly maintext, at
least the large impact episodes like ...well weren't they all a bit relationshippy??? Anywhoo--I rate it 5 chakrams for such reasons as great subtext as
well as a huge season for almost all my favorite episodes. Plus, I'm not a FIN hater (not a FIN lover either--just sort of a FIN ride-the-fencer) ...so
season 6 gets good ratings from me.
...may you find some comfort here.

Better late than never - Friendshipper/Other - 4 Chakrams. Although there's a lot to like in Season 6, what I hate, I REALLY hate and almost voted 3 but
decided not to hold what I don't like in disproportion to what I liked. Unfortunately some of my most negative feelings about the series seemed to be
congregated in Season 6.
NEGATIVES One theme I really disliked was the terrible family price Xena and Gabrielle had to pay as the result of their 25 year absence. In addition to the Eve situation in Season 5, this carried forward into Season 6 with the nearly back to back revelations of the horrendous deaths suffered by Cyrene, Hecuba and Herodotus. Cyrene's death was especially awful as it happened mainly as a plot device for what I feel is a particularly bad episode in The Haunting of Amphipolis. Its hard to think of a more disturbing image than Xena handling the charred bones of her mother and one I felt was totally unnecessary. At least Gabrielle's parents' death, although also ghastly, did serve the plot of Who's Gurkhan in that it was probably the only event that could have spurred Gab into pursuing cold blooded murder in the name of vengeance but still I could have lived with just one of these, but both, too much. Thank God Xena never went looking for Toris or she probably would have found his skeleton strapped to a wheel twisting in the wind in a field somewhere. There are a handful episodes that aren't my particular favorites for the simple reasons that are uninteresting, low quality or just plain silly. Then there are episodes I actively loathe and Season 6 unfortunately contains two of the latter in Soul Possession and Last of the Centaurs. I know some peoples' theory is that Soul Possession is actually from a scroll written by Joxer but even Joxer wouldn't distort history that badly so I chalk it up to a hoax against C.H.A.K.R.A.M. by some unknown person. SP completely contradicts the events in the SII and AFA and to have those two wonderful episodes tainted by a crappy comedy like SP is a shame. And why exactly would Gabrielle sell her soul to save Hope when she had just sacrificed her own life to kill her?!?!? But even more aggregious is the complete character assassination perpetrated upon Ares. This is not the Ares we saw in season 3 (or any season for that matter). This guy is just a slimy opportunist uttering atrociously lame lines like "holding out Hope...oops" and "just as long you look good on top of me". Ugggh!!! The one redeeming quality in SP is the very sweet "something new, borrowed, etc" scene between Xena and Joxer, one of my all-time favorites between those two. Call me cranky, but I've never liked "winking to the audience" moments in any series and didn't like here (e.g. Annie referencing Joxer being played by the producer's brother). Continuing the character assassination theme was what was done to Borias in LOTC. Throughout the series, we had been lead to believe that Borias did have some honor within him and that he did care for Xena and his unborn son and could have been the man to have turned it around for Xena if he'd been given the chance. But here we find out that he was seduced by Xena into abandoning his family in effect destroying what I'd admired in him. This episode also contains one of Gabrielle's worst lines ever when she questioned Xena if Bellach might be her son. I know sometimes lines exist to answer questions for the casual fans, but really, after everything they've been through, for Gabs to think for a moment that Xena would have withheld info like that is insulting. Also hated that no matter which side she's on, Gabrielle has to be proven wrong (with a few exceptions) so Xena can be right. In a total role reversal, Gab advocates killing Bellach with Xena being the one trying to avoid bloodshed but even with that, Gabrielle is still wrong. The cavalier way Xena pointed that out at the end felt a bit too happy go lucky on the heels of the virtual extinction of the Centaur Nation at the hands of Bellach not to mention the message that its okay to commit holocaust as long as you find the love at the end-yuck! On the plus side, it was great to see Ephiny again along with a grown up Xenon. I'll keep this one brief but I'm very much in the anti-AFIN camp. Didn't mind Xena dying but hated this specific reason for it. I just don't buy the contention that the 40,000 souls couldn't be released into a state of grace unless Xena stayed dead. Don't like the idea that a person's final judgement is in any way related to their murderer (although this is the one case where Xena didn't commit murder, it was an accident). Also, wished the final episode didn't introduce a bunch of characters we'd never met. Also, how could Xena have not had a single thought for Eve knowing she was going to have to stay dead. How about a quick "tell Eve I love her". Other negatives for me include: -two clip shows this season, especially since it was the last ever season. Send in the Clones was one of the weaker clip shows I thought plus I've never been particularly fond of the cutesy idea that Xena and gang existed for real and that there was a tv show based on the scrolls. So are we watching the reality or the show Gabs pointed out took liberties with her scrolls? -I found Eve to be mostly annoying especially in The Haunting of Amphipolis beyond the incessant Exorcist chanting was the simpering delivery of virtually all of her lines. -Xena's belated and lame "oh yeah, that reminds me" apology to Gabrielle for nearly killing her. Could and should have been a much more powerful moment had it been given its proper due. -The massive overkill of brutality inflicted upon Xena in Who's Gurkhan especially since in the final analysis, once Gurkhan was in the cell, Xena easily took over the place so why didn't she just do that in the first place. Not sure why the beating had to be so over the top other than director Michael Hurst's love of blood. -Akemi: enough said! POSITIVES There was a lot I liked in Season 6 as well but I'll keep it briefer since I've already droned on enough: -Gabrielle questioning and sometimes struggling in her role as a warrior, especially her insight that although she had the physical skills, she didn't always have the right judgement and seeing the deadly consequences of that in Legacy and especially her greatest challenge as Amazon queen in trying to lead the Amazons against the formidable Bellapheron (he was a great villain). She certainly came a long way from the naive farm girl who wanted a great adventure. -My second favorite comedy ever in Old Ares Had a Farm mixing great comedy with some sweet emotional moments. Great to see Ares trying to cope with mortality with his delusions of grandeur living as a king or priest of his own cult, shirking all physical labor with the exception of killing dinner, his wounded pride at Greba thinking he was Xena and Gabrielle's father. Loved Xena trying to recapture the peaceful feeling of her youth and Gabrielle teasingly pointing that out to her along Ares cynically response to the rainstorm "don't tell me, this is your favorite part". The scene with Gabrielle thanking Ares for saving her and his teasing "you were an afterthought" is one of my all-times favorites with them. -Xena recognizing that she, Gabrielle and Eve owe everything to Ares' for his sacrifice and going out on a limb to save him from the Furies and then helping him again in OAHAF. Loved the sweet moment between Ares and Xena at the end with her allowing him his one-in-a-billion hope. -Xena arranging to get Ares and Aphrodite their godhoods back. Poor Dite was just not made to be a mortal. Ares' joy at whipping the fireballs was great! -Ares applauding Xena in admiration after she once again bested him in Path of Vengeance. Both Xena and Ares doing what they do and Ares not wanting it any other way. Great conclusion to their relationship. -Renee O'Connor getting a second chance to direct a much better episode this season than her first outing. -The God You Know: Ares demonstrating his love for Aphrodite by risking his life to try to save her. Great to see that his ability to love wasn't just restricted to Xena. Loved the moment at the end with Ares and Dite goofing with each other walking out together. Also liked Xena's understanding that Caligula was damaged and feeling dirty that she had to manipulate him to his death, even if it was the only option, good character development for her. Can't remember another time where she had regrets like that. -Many Happy Returns: Great funny, feel-good episode before the final end. Loved the tradition of the birthday practical jokes (although as someone else said, wish we'd seen a Xena birthday). Still think Xena let the fish guts land on her. Camp being setup in seconds still makes me LOL! Wonderful scene at the end with the poem, Xena's "huh" reaction to it, Xena and Gabrielle flying off into the sunset. -The Abyss: Average episode but a couple of scenes impressed: the continuity from Legacy with Gabrielle's hesitation to kill causing her injury. This was so much more realistic than her almost seamless transformation to warrior in Season 5. Much more in character for Gabrielle to struggle and glad they addressed a bit this season. Also liked Xena initially thinking Gabrielle was talking about her but then realizing she was flashing back to her fear of Xena with regards to Hope and Xena finally understanding, though too bad Gabrielle never heard her say the words. -When Fates Collide: Overall liked it but never quite understood Caesar's motivation to betray Xena in this one. Alti certainly isn't worth risking fate again. Did like the theme that no matter what, Xena's fate was to be crucified by Caesar, Caesar to be betrayed and stabbed and that Xena and Gabrielle to meet and feel a strong bond.

Moy, I totally agree about the incredible lameness of Gabrielle's "does that mean he's your son" line. (That just might be the lamest line of
the entire show.) First of all, it makes Gabrielle sound really dumb -- what, she doesn't know that one man can have children with two different women?
-two clip shows this season, especially since it was the last ever season. Send in the Clones was one of the weaker clip shows I thought plus I've never been particularly fond of the cutesy idea that Xena and gang existed for real and that there was a tv show based on the scrolls. So are we watching the reality or the show Gabs pointed out took liberties with her scrolls? Agree about SITC, and also not a fan of the "show is based on the scrolls" idea. SITC takes it to a new level, suggesting that (1) Xena, Gabrielle and gang really existed and (2) what we saw on the show is not an accurate representation of their story. That's a little too "metafiction" for my taste. When I watch a show and immerse myself in it, I like to think that what I see "really happened" in its fictional reality. (Well, unless what I see is LOTC or SP, of course. Anyway, good analysis. I pretty much agree with all of your positives and negatives (except I didn't like the "fated to be crucified" theme in WFC), but I went with a 3 rather than a 4.

I'm just not up to doing an in depth explanation...I voted subtexter, 5 chakrams. Seaosn 6 is one of my favorite seasons, minus FIN.
LOVED the Abyss, that cave scene is heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time. LOVED Who's Gurkan-I hate seeing Xena tortured but I love the angst of it, and I love that she imagines Gabrielle dancing erotically as a way of coping...and I love the costumes, the dances, and I love the way Gabrielle strokes Xena's arm when she is recovering! Loved the Ring Trilogy (overall, though I do agree with LK that the Valkerie EX was a bit out of character...still, she was HOT!), loved the kissy lips on the letter she left for Gabrielle, and the sleeping beauty type kiss, obviously. I loved When Fates Collide, and Many Happy Returns, along with the comedies and just the general closeness and feel between Xena and Gabrielle again, after the slaughter of their relationship in season 5. Hate FIN, and there are, as always a few duds in the season, and annoying points, but yes- I like my maintext and I like my season 6 Xena- and it doesn't hurt that both Lucy and Renee were stunningly gorgeous this season.

Love this season too, and I disagree with some points of MayCullen. I think LOTC was a nice episode a part that line from Gabrielle. But I don't have right
now to tell more. I have to go to work. I'll carry on tonight

LadyKate63 wrote:I sort of took it as a more or less given that she got there because of her relationship with Xena... But then I remembered that Xena hadn't met Alti yet, at the time when Caesar stepped in and decided not to break her legs after all.. Sooo, anyroad! Bitexter, giving season six 4 I started something more in depth but soon got lost in my ramblings so I came to the simple conclusion that I like the season a lot, but it could have been better. That rates over a 3 but under a 5. A few examples would be that many of my favorite episodes are here; When Fates Collide, The Ring Trilogy, Coming Home, To Helicon and Back, Old Ares Had a Farm, which I all like for different reasons but mainly has to do with character-developments and my much beloved 'what if' theories. I also enjoyed the more open subbiness of it all but that Ares was still around and not completely down for the count because of it. All in all it felt too final. Too many supposedly loose ends were tied up and storylines finished off and archived. I never liked Virgil. Never liked Eve... Well, the baby was okay... heh It would have been much more interesting if they had showed Virgil and Eve learning to get along instead of the whole Gabby/Virgil deal they had going on.. What was that about?? And as mentioned... "In the name of Eli..." My God! Can you say "Obsessed Member of a Cult " much?? Sheesh!! Had they kept Livia, I would have cheered! Not the brightest character, maybe, but one helluva lot more fun to watch than Eve! And that would have been an ongoing struggle for all parties to be involved in. I also thought the turning of Livia into Eve with the help of Eli was well creepy!! Just poof, in comes a deity and all her life changes in the blink of an eye. I think that's actually kind of frightening, bordering on brainwashing. Suppose they didn't have time to redeem her in a more believable way, but... anyhoo... I do like some of the things in Send in the Clowns, but it was way too much of a 'this-is-how-an-obsessed-fan-behaves' feeling and also, why explain to each other every two seconds what they're doing?? New viewers probably wouldn't think much of the ep if it happened to be the first they saw anyway and old fans don't need that kind of information! Like with CSI and how they always explain to their fellow investigators how they need to do something... But I digress... |

Gotta agree with Jinxy here. I don't think I've outright said this anywhere, but I would have loved it if they had kept Livia as Livia and not had her go through some big spiritual conversion. Livia was badass and would have certainly proven a worthy adversary and caused some well-deserved angst and moral dilemma, esp. if the previous struggles over the Gabrielle/Hope issue crept back up.

Re keeping Livia as Livia:
There is a fandom rumor that one idea TPTB had was to end Season 5 with Looking Death in the Eye, then have Livia (or some version thereof) as the S6 premiere, and have a season-long storyline of "Xena and Gabrielle vs. the Roman Empire" with Xena's own daughter as the Champion of Rome and her principal nemesis. It sounds like an intriguing idea, and I do wish we had seen more of Livia. However, I think there would be a major problem with a season-long Xena vs. Livia arc. First of all, it would mean a depressed Xena for a whole season -- not a good thing. Secondly, I think that by Season 6 it would be kind of hard to believe that Xena would not prevail against any human opponent if she wanted to. So basically either Xena would have to kill her own daughter (taking Livia out of the picture anyway), or it would look like Xena was allowing Livia to slaughter innocents because she couldn't bring herself to kill her own daughter. So I'm not sure it could have worked.

I Voted Subtexter: 5 chakrams .. because even tho i'm not a subtxter.. i fond there were alot of subtxting tho out seasion 6 there were some epsiodes i
loved and others i hated.. but i personally think season six was all about xena and gabrilles relationship with each other they focased alot the time n them
thats why i'm going to go with subtxter cause there was alot of hidden meanings in there when ever there was a xena and gabrelle moment.. but thats just my
opinion

Sarinou, that's really cool the way you voted--I like the way that stereotypes don't always turn out the way we think. What did you like best about
season 6?
I voted friendshipper/other, 4 chakrams. Hmmm...it's hard to define my own feelings about season 6. When I picture the season as a whole, I didn't enjoy it very much. There was just too much SuperXena; there wasn't that feeling of the characters I loved so well being as human as they were powerful, and there was too much sheer despair. While To Helicon and Back is a well-written episode that is one logical conclusion (both to the Amazons' stories and to Gabrielle's personal story), I hate, hate the idea that the Amazon race ends like that. Believing that the Amazons were worth fighting for was one of the things that made Endgame such a great episode. (So I rewrite the story a bit in my head and insert a couple of fanfics, lol.) So looking at the season from a distance, I wouldn't have rated it so highly. However, season 6 has a lot of wonderful episodes too. There were episodes that were globally good (such as Coming Home, with some great Xena/Ares moments, and an apology to Gabrielle that I believed in), and then there were episodes where I only liked pieces, but I liked those pieces very much, such as The Abyss and Legacy. The campfire scene at the end of Legacy has to be one of my favorite moments in the series. Xena retells the old familiar story about how seeing Gabrielle's light and then having Gabrielle in her life was the thing that changed the darkness for her, and Gabrielle responds that they have come full circle, and I think that's the story of friendship, that you eventually receive (and learn to receive) what it is that you have given. Brunhilda is one of my favorite characters. I know that there's some debate on this, but I believe that the Ring trilogy is one of the best arcs in the series--I love the way it explores love and the conscious, deliberate decision to live without love, and Brunhilda is one of my favorite characters. Plus, Beowulf done Xena-style vastly improves the story IMO. The more times I watch When Fates Collide, the more I see in it, and again, the more I learn about love. So I think on the whole, the good of season 6 outweighs the bad.

I'm an other because I don't choose a label for myself so had to vote Friendshipper (which Im not)/Other & voted 3 Chakrams.
I would have loved to give S6 more because there are some outstanding episodes (among them AFIN I & II). The season however was hugely weighted too obvious for me with appeasement moments in various episodes. By that I mean they tried a little too hard to appease what I had read and knew to be huge and harsh fan criticisms (loud and clear on the internet) stemming from S5, one of my favorite seasons. As well it was and felt to be a season of tying up loose ends with conclusions to the amazon's by a great action-packed episode, To Helicon and Back; The Last of the Centaurs, a great action-packed drama despite the horrible mass murder of the centaurs but great continuity linking back to Borias' first son -Marton Csokas gave an amazing performance. When Fates Collide was a super creative episode writing Caesar messing with time and fate (quite ingenious). I'm an Alti fan and as always enjoyed her reappearance. There was a sense of the show coming to the end especially with the last four episodes clearly offering alternative endings. Of all things I hated the most was Ares being absent for the end, the grand finale' yet given it was the end of Xena for real, allowing her to select her own time and reason of death defining from the end forward she would remain in Gabrielle's heart was an amazing, ingenious and respectful conclusion to a series I shall miss greatly, forever.

Bitexter, 4 chakrams.
This was not an easy season to vote on! Several of my favorite episodes are in it - but so are a few of those I can't stand (SP, TLOTC).Still, the good most definitely outweighed the bad. However, it was probably a good thing I didn't rewatch AFIN again just before voting... ![]() |
