And I agree Joxer was good in it. He was really the only in-character character in the whole thing. It was nice to see Meg again, but her "dead is dead" line about Gabrielle was pretty nasty. What happened to that heart of gold? I did like the Xena/Ares kiss. Plus the wedding gown was nice, and I liked some of the looks between them in the wedding scene. I'm planning to rewatch SP soon for Ep of the Week -- I'll see if I find it more redeemable than before. I did like, in theory, the fact that they brought back so many recurring characters for a farewell appearance as Season 6 was wrapping up. Not only Joxer and Meg but also Ephiny in LOTC, Borias (I did enjoy some of the Xena/Borias moments in AFIN), Caesar and Brutus in WFC, and even Minya, sort of, in Send in the Clones. Too bad most of these farewell appearances were such a waste. Oh, and WFC would have been a golden opportunity to bring on Callisto for a farewell appearance, as well. Personally I think they should have skipped SP and made WFC a two-parter with Ares, Callisto, and more Joxer. Though I agree having Callisto would've been cool, if they would've put her in the same role as Alti it would've completely bulldozed what they did with her character in season five. I think they knew the fans loved Evil Callisto. And it would have been an alternate universe anyway, so her development in the real world would have been unaffected. You couldn't really have Callisto in Alti's role in WFC -- in the alternate world Callisto would not have been a goddess. My idea would be to have Ares serve as the "bridge between worlds" (i.e. awakening both Xena and Gabrielle's memories of their "real" lives), and Callisto as a regular human being, seeking revenge against Empress Xena for destroying Cirra. (Different world but I kind of like the idea that Cirra's destruction by Xena was "meant to be" -- she could still have destroyed it while leading a campaign of conquest at Caesar's side.) In S6 we got three excellent comedies that aren't quite up to the Season 3 comedy constellation (Been There Done That, The Quill Is Mightier, Fins, Femmes & Gems) Oh I don't know about that. I find FF&G to be boring, even though it has some genuinely funny lines. Except for 'Soul Possession' and 'Send in the Clones' the S6 comedies are MUCH, MUCH better than 'Fins, Femmes, and Gems'. As for the sex and violence . . . loved the sex, hated the violence . I think it was distasteful of TPTB to give us one of the last images of Xena as a bloody (and headless) slab of meat hanging from a tree. I think once we saw the samurai bring his sword down and the screen went red, we got the message that Xena was dead. The beating in 'Who's Gurkhan?' was over-the-top too, to the point where I wish someone would have stepped in and told them they had to cut it out of the episode. Banner made by Pandora.

I also think the reason she was picked was because of that whole "through time" thing she had got going. Alti was supposed to be some sort of constant enemy to Xena and Gabrielle's souls. And in many ways When Fates Collide was another uber and soulmates story was much as it was about the influence and importance of Caesar. ETA: On the sex and violence. I kinda loved the violence. To me it in no way made the show drop down in quality, and it's not as if season 6 was the first time we got some proper smashing, slashing and bashing. The Gurkhan torture, Gabrielle getting beat by Varia -- it might have been bloody and gratuitous but it looked damn good. I also could have loved the sex, I've got no problem with it in general on TV. However what turned me off it was that it was only used for evil. What started in season 5 with Antony and Ares continued into this season and if we saw explicit sexuality it was always used for evil deeds (disguised as good). Everything popular is wrong. How many genocides did we witness:? 2 1/2 (if you count the amazons as a half), not to mention 40,000 lost because of a fire and goodness knows how many because of the tasteless "cloud" in FIN II? and a man killing amazons because he thought it was sport and then a different man killing them off because they had given up on his mother. Although I was more disturbed about the sex part. I did read a review that suggested there was more skin on show because RT was trying to showcase his lovely wife more, but I'm afraid I found most of it boring and distasteful. Sorry. I liked SP. Don't really care about the modern bit but the the part that shows the difficulty that Xena and Joxer had in coping with their loss was well done even if the resolution (i.e. Ares saving her) wasn't. Shame that Danielle Cormack's last show was so bad. Not a great adieu. comedies (YAT, OOHAF especially) were good, but not in the class of S3 comedies. Obviously it was a trend that continued over the six seasons -- offhand I'd say the escalation of graphic violence began with Season 4 with the slaughter of the Northern Amazons, and the death of Brutus in Antony & Cleopatra in S5 was pretty gory -- but to me it just reached a truly distasteful level by S6. Just the other day I was rewatching The God You Know and I was struck by how gory and graphic Caligula's demise was. Was that really necessary? (And mind you, that's an episode I mostly like.) Did the crucifixion in WFC have to be so sadistic? Did we need to see two shots of Xena's headless carcass in AFIN? As for the beating in Who's Gurkhan... well, it seems to me that the gauntlet in The Gauntlet achieved an equally powerful effect without the "ewww" factor. The sexualized violence (the sex/murder scene in WFC, the beating in WG) was particularly disturbing IMO. Plus, as Gabsfan23 said, two and a half genocides, cannibalism, 40,000 people dying in a fire... that's some body count. Obviously X:WP was always a show that dealt with violent matters; Callisto was a pretty violent episode, with the slaughter in the village at the start of the ep and the crucified villagers in the scene where Xena first confronts Callisto. But I think that if you put some of the most violent scenes from S1-3 side by side with the violent scenes from S6 (and a few from S5), it would be quite a shock. As for the sex -- I think there's a difference between sexuality and sexploitation. Most of the sex portrayed in S6 seemed of the sleazy variety, both because of the situations in which it took place (Xena and/or Gabrielle seducing someone as part of a plan) and because of the way it was filmed. I remember Daughter of Tiaran saying something about the camera "leering" at the particpants, and I think you do get a sense of that in Heart of Darkness, Who's Gurkhan and The God You Know; to some extent also in Antony & Cleopatra -- I'm really not a fan of the fruit scene. (By contrast, the Xena/Ares scenes in Eternal Bonds and Amphipolis Under Siege don't seem exploitative to me at all -- perhaps I'm biased because I'm a shipper , but I do think it's also the way they're shot. There's no camera lingering slowly and lasciviously over bodies and body parts; actually you don't get to see Xena's body exposed at all, in either scene. The same was true of the Xena/Borias sex scenes in The Debt and Sin Trades.) Also, with Xena/Ares and even Xena/Antony, there was (IMO) an undercurrent of genuine emotion that made those scenes about more than just sex. In each case, the sexual activity is between two people who may not be conventionally "in love" but have complex feelings toward each other. In S6, we have harems and public orgies and sexual activity for the express purpose of titillation, often not only of the audience but also of spectators within the scene itself. All of that, plus the increase in plot lines in which Xena uses seduction to achieve her goals, really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Your mileage, of course, may vary. We really seen the emotions of a romantic relationship between Xena and Gabrielle and even though not many people enjoyed Soul Possession that kind of cemented it because of Xena's soul being in Joxer's body and Gabby married him There was also the poem in Many Happy Returns and of course the episode that is coming to be my complete favorite When Fates Collide and of course the dance from Heart of Darkness. We also got to see Gabrielle come more to terms with her being a warrior in The Legacy and how she dealt with knowing that you can make mistakes in the heat of the moment but that doesn't mean you quit fighting. The Ring trilogy I'm still up in the air about as well as the Lucifer arch. I also loved the fact that they brought back more of the comedic moments as well. So I gave it a Subtexter 5 and really just pretend that AFIN didn't happen at all lol. "No Xena, No Xenaverse!" It was reign of Xena the Invincible, which I find endlessly entertaining. Invinci-Xena is way too cool. Some pretty awesome storylines in there. The gratuitous gore and sex was a bit off-putting, but I can take it as Xena's new, edgier style. The chakram that was taken away was because of TUE and FIN. Just... No. - Atrophy

WFC was the epitome of eternal love. Even tampering with the Fates loom couldn't stop Xena and Gabrielle from finding each other again. The violence didn't bother me because it seemed to fit the violent end we knew was coming for Xena. You don't live that life without eventually meeting a brutal end, not that I liked seeing Xena's headless corpse, but I think on the flip side the rage and devastation of Gabrielle wouldn't have been fitting under another form of death. Nothing can be more devastating than seeing the love of your life and soulmate decapitated and strung up like a slaughtered deer. The sex didn't bother me either, maybe because it was in favor of the subber view. As for the HOD dance, well, this did involve Lucifer so I wasn't expecting a Disney movie. Of course, being the last season it earned an extra chakram for sentimental reasons. Its's quite the mixed bag really. Some episodes that I really enjoy like Coming Home, Gabrielle's Trilogy, The Norse Trilogy, OAHAF, YAT and WFC. But also some really terrible episodes like TGYK, SITC, SP and LOTC. And of course there is FIN which falls into the "bad" category for me (as much as I want to like and as much as I recognise than no finale could have met my expectations for the finale). The season also loses something for me because it didn't have a connecting theme. It didn't necessarily need a season long story-arc (although that is my preferred method of story-telling when it comes to TV series), but some common theme would have been cool. The "death of the mythological world" was a pretty common theme, but it seemed to happen accidentally and I would have liked to have seen a stronger resonance with the characters in respect of the impact the death of the Greek gods, Centaurs, Amazons, etc had on their world. Season 6 is my least favorite season, but it also has som episodes I really like, but I feel like the overall quality of the show dropped drastically in S6. (i.e HOD, THAB, HOA, and most definitely FIN) I seriously disliked FIN. Seeing the headless and strung up corpse of the Warrior Princess was totally unnessecessary in my point of view. We all knew she had died when seeing the samauri sword coming at her. The HOD ep, I didn't like too much, could be because I'm a HUGE shipper fan but I doubt it. I just didn't really like it all that much. THAB wasn't great, having the son of Artemis killing off the Amazons because they've "strayed" I suppose would be the word doesn't seem right. Being they are Artemis' Amazons you would think one would want to preserve that. HOA was, eh alright. Not great. I don't think the torture of Cyrene was necessary either. Xena had enough trauma as it was knowing she missed her daughter growing up and then having to kill off the Olympians because they were still petty enough to go after her even after 25 years. I didn't like how Evil Xena was portrayed in LOTC. Evil Xena taking away the kids father and what not. I'm a fan of Evil Xena but that episode just didn't sit well with me at all. More or less LK explained it well with that episode. The Ring Trilogy didn't exactly sit well with me. I enjoyed the Evil Xena parts, those were awesome. But I could do without the whole sneering Valkyrie thing and the whole lost year. . If someone was looking for someone like Xena I would think she would be found pretty fast being she was a new person in the Norse Lands, especially being with Rothgar.... (sp?) TGYK was pretty good in my point of view. As were, OAHAF, WFC, MHR, SITC. It was amusing seeing the geeky fans in SITC. There were some funny lines in MHR. And I think Alti was good in WFC, the ending scene with Caesar dying was a bit much. I loved OAHAF, really really funny lines in there. Loved the whole mortal Ares thing and domestic Xena thing. CH and POV, were really good. I loved the Scorpion/Swan story, really neat. With CH I loved the fight scene and the ending. Mortal Ares thinking he had killed Xena got to me. That would have been tough on him if it had happened that way. But I'm glad it didn't. YAT was really funny as well. Although it had thrown me off with the whole camera crew in Ancient Greece. Loved the Shipper moments in there. Especially the ending with Ares the God and testing out his powers again. And of course Xena's look as he walks off. SP was alright in my eyes. Could have been a bit better. Although I don't see how it's really supposed to a comedy. Loved it how after Xena had kicked him, with him saying: "The more you fight the more I'm drawn to you" line, (I think that's how it went. :P I've forgotten a lot of it, it's been awhile. Heh. Guess it's time for a recap ) All in all I, personally, think that it could have been just a bit more episodes with Ares. Seeing as how it was his last season like all but also being that was the last we saw of him period. May he R.I.P. But yes, these are just my points of view. XenAresG No Xena, No Xenaverse!

And that scene is one of the most powerful on the show in my opinion. The rain, blood and headless Xena, not to mention ROC's gorgeous interpretation of Gabrielle's reaction. It tears my heart into a million little devastated pieces every time I watch it. Breathtakingly beautiful in its tragic glory. Everything popular is wrong.

(And yes, I remembered to adjust the shipper total downwards for Elfrieda's mistaken vote of 4 instead of 3.) Interesting that not a single subtexter so far has given Season 6 a rating below 4 out of 5, and fully 60% of the subtexters who voted give it a "5."
