Why?? The Back or the Front? I prefer the Back - and if I ever get a Chakram tattoo, it's the back that I would most DEFINATELY get. I think it has just a little more character, and looks more dangerous than the front... more.... sharp. hee! But am I the only one who thought these designs really clash with her overall look? If it weren't for the paua shells, which her sword shares, it would look really weird. At least the handle of the super chakram is the bronze colour of her armour and resembles the curvy patterns. I don't get why they chose these "solar" patterns.

"gimme gimme" - it could have been fluro pink for all she cared, as long as it was sharp and cut people good I guess cause we never got to see how she actually ended up with the Chakram, we can never know what she was wearing, but I think RJ said that she's had it for a very long time, (even when she was evil) but preferred to use other weapons... The gold on the Chakram would probably match better with the Evil Xena outfit... maybe?

I think because of what athenasword said--the symmetry. And it just seems more Greek to me as well. I think the chakram actually complimented her look. It didn't need to match her outfit to look good. I loved that design of the original one. Something about it just really worked for me. And in terms of uniqness, it was more unique than the yin yang chakram.

Not sure why, it just seems more interesting visually and also more "distinctive/unique". I don't really recall ever reading anything about how the "designs" on the actual chakram came about. Certainly it doesn't seem to particularly match the "evil Xena" leathers the character wore when she was first introduced (which if anything, had a slightly more "feminine" edge to them with the "squirly" pattern of the breastplate). I'm trying to recall what the "pattern" was like on evil Xena's arm gauntlets, knee pads, etc, but I don't recall them being similar to the chakram. It probably just boils down to whatever the prop makers decided looked "interesting". In the "grander" scheme of things, I didn't particular mind that Xena's chakram wasn't particularly "co-ordinated" with her leathers. And while the "super" chakram did share the same "copper" colour as her "regular" leathers, at the time it was introduced it did clash with the blue leather/silver armour pregnancy leathers that Xena was wearing. The chakram-and-sword pendant I have has carvings only on the front and it's the "back" design of the chakram. But I like that the two sides look different.

Does the chakram really have a back and a front? Considering that in terms of function the two sides are the same? Re the "front" looking more Greek, and natya's point that the chakram is not really a Grek weapon: maybe the idea was to show the duality of Xena being both Greek and "foreign"?

At the time that Chakram aired on TV, I was still a fairly new fan. I believe I had seen a lot of the early seasons episodes as reruns before season 5 began. When I first saw Chakram, I realized that there were two different sides to the chakram. I think I had seen both sides before, but never at the same time and I believe I always wondered why the chakram had the pointed design one episode and the square design the next. LOL

They were metal, looked more like steel actually, and they were completely inscribed in the surface with prayers in Sanskirt. They were really beautiful. It's funny, but in the very beginning of the show's airing, fans thought there were two chakrams -- the designs on both sides initially confused people. Thanks for the links -- it was great to see Bret Rudnick's Whoosh article again after all these years.
