Was Xena Darker & Hercules Lighter Due To Gender Differences?

I just can't help but think & wonder sometimes if TPTB purposely made Xena a darker series, so that mainstream audiences could take an action series about two women seriously. I've always thought that part of the reason why Hercules was a much lighter series in comparision to Xena's is because he's a man & he had nothing to prove in terms of strength. Hercules is finally on dvd in Australia, season 1 comes out in September.

Interesting to note, the packaging is exactly like the US editions, although they did say artwork to change, but still good news for Aussie fans.

Levels of violence

I was watching Eye Of The Beholder today, and thinking it's kind of violent (people being squashed under a cyclops, etc.). What's more, Hercules didn't seem to mind the violence - he grins cheerfully when the bad guy gets crushed. Well, the bad guy wasn't fully human, but a normal villager is killed in the same way earlier on. There are tons of XWP photos floating around these days, but does anyone know how to get ahold of scanned HTLJ official photos? Did they have a photo club like Creation? I found some scans for Seasons 1 & 2 mostly, and of course the XWP crossovers, but I'm having trouble finding anything else. There are some photos for sale on eBay, but I'm more interested in finding scanned photos. Thanks!

I've taken my cue from some others who are doing ep-by-ep reviews and analyses, and I've decided to do them for HTLJ. (Hopefully this will spark some more discussion on this board, too.) I'm starting with the Action Pack movies and going on.
